Quality CCTV and MPEG-4 (H.264 AVC) CCTV recording equipment
When it comes to selecting a video recorder for your CCTV application one has to bear in mind the amount of time that you want to record, the quality that you want to record, and the framerate at which you want to record surveillance footage. This influences the size of the hard disk that you will need for the recorder as well as the video compression standard that the recorder will need to use to store the video. Most DVR’s (Digital video recorders) today uses either Wavelet or Motion-JPEG (MJPEG) compression algorithms. With these algorithms a recorder only achieves a compression ratio of between 1:10 and 1:20 for proper (DVD quality) recording. BGC developed a series of embedded DVR’s that uses the MPEG-4 compression standard, which compresses video down to a ratio of up to 1:200 without compromising any video quality. This means that you would be able to record up to 20 times longer on the same size of hard drive than you would be able to record on a wavelet or MJPEG DVR, if you want to record full speed (25fps) video per channel DVD quality. Embedded DVR’s store their operating system or firmware on a chip, meaning that if your hard drive fails, you only lose the recorded footage and not the entire machine.

LCD CCTV monitors that are capable of displaying CVBS (composite video) or SVHS (S-video) signals are usually expensive. BGC has developed robust field-hardened metal-enclosed TFT LCD monitors for CCTV applications that can display various formats such as CVBS, SVHS or VGA continuously with high MTBF at an extremely competitive price.
